EMDC: A program designed for future leaders of the built environment sector
by .
Dear Reader,
Knowing professionals like you is one of the most rewarding parts of my career, as I truly value the unique perspectives you bring to our field and believe your insights both strengthen our professional community and inspire me personally to explore new ways of making an impact. Because of that shared vision, I’d love to occasionally check in to tell you about the exciting work that’s happening at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering to advance leaders in our profession.
As you might be aware, Northwestern offers a one-of-a-kind master’s program designed to prepare the next generations of professionals in the built environment sector, the MS in Executive Management for Design and Construction (EMDC) program.
After becoming director of EMDC, I launched a broad conversation with our industry to identify the top knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to make someone a successful executive in the built environment sector. Hearing directly from a wide cross-section of the industry gave us fresh insights into both employers and students alike; and it also reaffirmed that there’s a great need for these highly educated individuals – and a desire for unique opportunities to network and collaborate in our industry.
This feedback inspired us to begin restructuring the program as applicable, including the launch of a hybrid version of EMDC and of events like BuiltX to gather our community together quarterly to share insights and knowledge.
To keep you informed about our latest developments, I’d be pleased to share the occasional future update from EMDC. This will include opportunities for you to engage more deeply with our overall mission — ranging anywhere from attendance at our professional gatherings to participation as guest lecturers in our courses — and invitations to share information about EMDC with your network. I trust that this window into our work might pique your curiosity and inspire new conversations, connections, and collaborations that benefit us all.
In that spirit, the video linked below provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the EMDC program and features several of our alumni detailing their experience of how the program has benefitted their careers. Each time I watch it, I feel inspired, and I hope you do, too.
